Westinghouse vs. Generac: Which Generator Actually Works Off-Grid?

Image of Westinghouse and Generac generators side-by-side

Let's be real, living off the grid isn't glamorous when your generator craps out. We learned that the hard way. So here's the breakdown between two generators for off-grid power we personally tested out here on Goodwin's Ranch: one left us stranded, the other saved our butts.

The Westinghouse Disaster

The first generator we picked up was a Westinghouse 4650 Peak Watt duel-fuel generator. Sounded solid on paper. But it was straight up garbage from the start. Here's why:

  • It came damaged out the box. Dented frame? Check. Internal issues because of it? Check.
  • Unreliable performance. It would just shut off mid-use like it got tired or something. Yes, it's a lower-end generator, but we should be able to use it at least an hour for basic use.
  • Oil leakage + clogged filter. Nick’s dad had to swap out the hose and clamp just to stop the oil from leaking everywhere. The hose and clamp came already damaged.

“I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s a piece of crap.” - Nick, Goodwin’s Ranch

To be fair, some of the issues might've stemmed from rough shipping, but that's no excuse. If it can't survive the journey, it sure as heck isn't even vacation ready.

The Generac Game Changer

After the Westinghouse fiasco, we opted for a Generac GP5500E. And this one? It delivered.

It fires right up on the first pull. No fighting, no fuss. Fires right up on Propane (more on this in a later post) like it was born for it.

Our favorite part? This thing’s built like it wants to power a whole dang house. Rugged, no nonsense at all.

We decided to put that to the test.

For the past few weeks, we’ve been running our entire utility shed off it. No complaints. No stutters. Just straight up power.

Admittedly, it's loud... but you know what?? It gets the job done.

So, which generator should I buy?

  • Avoid Westinghouse unless you like headaches and leaking oil.
  • Go with Generac if you want something that works, even if it's a little noisy.

Bottom Line:

For off-grid folks, homesteaders, or anyone prepping for power outages: don’t skimp on your generator. Get the one that starts up, keeps running, and doesn’t leave you in the dark.

We are also in the works of setting up our renewable energy system and will keep you updated on what works, and what doesn't.
